The participation of Greek nature in Easter!

20 April 2022

Spring is the season of rebirth – Easter. The Greek nature actively participates in the celebration of Easter, connecting insects, plants, flowers with it, with stories and symbolism. Many more times, giving them a similar name to the celebration: Pasxa (Easter) or Labri (that means brilliant) / (Πάσχα- Λαμπρή in greek) as we otherwise call it.

Easter

But let’s see what all this means:

1.Pasxalia (lilac plant)
The message of spring foreshadows every year the lilac plant (pasxalia in greek) ! The “happy” festive plant with the bright lilac or pink flowers that smells as if someone emptied a bottle of perfume on it! The story tells us that the lilac is found on Calvary, where Christ was crucified. Its active participation in the Crucifixion resulted in withering that day. So nature empathizes… Until the Resurrection… Because then it was revived in the form we know the plant until now days. Purple, pink, lilac flowers that smell nonstop. So her name is Pasxalia comes from the word Pasxa. During the Easter period you will definitely see it, smell it and do not forget to photograph it!

Easter

2.Pasxalitsa or lambritsa (Ladybug)
Who does not love this little “charm” beetle, lucky as we believe? From a young age we believe that if he comes and sits on us, we are lucky, he will bring us luck and a wish will be fulfilled. The popular narrative tells us that its colors are associated with the morning of Easter for the passions of Christ, or others associate it with the insect of the Virgin Mary, the beetle of the Virgin Mary as they call it. Pasxalitsa or lambritsa inextricably linked to the name Pasxa or Labri. So if you see a ladybug then be sure that Easter is approaching and if it sits on you, do not forget to make a wish…and who knows? Maybe it comes out true!

Easter

3. Paparouna (Poppy)
Another spring flower that participates “actively” in Easter, is the poppy. According to mythology, it was the sacred plant of the Goddess Demeter! This beautiful flower with the crimson petals, which blushes the Greek land every Easter, forming many times a black cross on its petals, is admirable by all. Story says that during the crucifixion of Christ His holy blood flowed on the earth, just under His cross, and that’s where the poppy blossomed. Scarlet like the drop of blood.

Easter

Every Easter, people and nature participate in the most glorious celebration of Greece. They empathize with the Passion of Christ and are born again with His Resurrection.

The color red dominates everywhere!
